We are delighted that this text has reached its seventh edition and continues to be widely adopted in master’s and doctoral ethics courses across counseling graduate programs throughout the United States and internationally.

Our original goal in writing this book was to create a comprehensive and practical resource on ethics, law, and professional issues in counseling—one that would provide graduate students with essential knowledge and offer practitioners sound, applicable guidance.

Over the years, faculty and students who have used this text have described it as thorough, accessible, and rich with real-world examples that make complex topics easier to understand. We hope you will find it equally engaging and useful.

You may also find it helpful to know a bit about us, the co-authors, and how this text came to be. From 1997 to 2006, we both served as professors in the counseling graduate program at the University of New Orleans. Ted Remley, an attorney with years of legal experience, has also worked as a school and community college counselor.

Barbara Herlihy has served as a school counselor and as a licensed professional counselor in private practice and community agency settings. She is currently a counselor educator whose primary interests include counselor ethics and social justice.
