NFPA 900, Building Energy Code

IMPORTANT NOTICES AND DISClAIMERS CONCERNING NFPA® STANDARDS NFPA®codes, standards, recommended practices, and guides (“NFPA Standards”), of which the docume nt contained h e rein is one, a re developed through a consensus standards deve lopment process approved by the American National Standards Institute. T his process brings together voluntee rs representing varied viewpoints and interests to achieve consensus on fire and oth er safety issues. While the NFPA administers the process and establishes rules to promote fairness in the development of consensus, it docs not independently test, evaluate, or verify the accuracy of any information or the soundness of any judgments contained in NFPA Standards.

It is increasingly critical that buildings meet consensus criteria and regulations for energy efficiency. NFPA 900, Building Energy Code, offers complete requirements for energy conservation in the built environment. The code incorporates the technical provisions of ASHRAE 90.1, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, and ASHRAE 90.2, Energy Efficient Design of Low-Rise Residential Buildings, to provide general provisions for building design, construction, and maintenance.

NFPA 900 answers the need for a stand-alone building energy code, complete with administrative procedures and appropriate annexes, table of contents, definitions, references, index, and other information developed through the NFPA process. This ANSI-accredited document is your guide to manage energy use by improving conservation and reducing costs by complying with minimum energy-efficient requirements for the following:

  • Design, construction, reconstruction, alteration, repair, demolition, removal, inspection, issuance and revocation of permits or licenses, and installation of equipment applicable to energy conservation in all buildings, structures, and related equipment
  • Energy efficiency in existing buildings under rehabilitation and maintenance of construction
  • Provisions for materials to be used in connection with activities specified in the code
