NFPA 1984: Standard on Respirators for Wildland Fire-Fighting and Wildland Urban Interface Operations

NFPA 1984, the Standard on Respirators for Wildland Fire Fighting and Wildland Urban Interface Operations, was developed by NIOSH, NPPTL, and NFPA. This standard sets guidelines for respiratory protection used during wildland fire-fighting activities.

The 2022 version of NFPA 1984, which is the standard for respirators used in wildland firefighting and wildland urban interface operations, sets out the rules for complete respiratory protection gear that wildland firefighters can use to guard against dangers from breathing in harmful substances.

It also includes the growing medical and health issues that firefighters face because they are exposed to harmful substances created during wildland and urban interface fire-fighting situations. Wildland firefighters often have to work for a long time during fire fighting, and they can’t use their self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) for very long because the air supply runs out after a while.

When creating the first version of NFPA 1984, the standard for respirators used in wildland firefighting and wildland urban interface operations, the NFPA Technical Committee on Respiratory Protection Equipment worked closely with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL) to record the level of protection needed in wildland firefighting situations.
